Where’s George? Producing an Indie Feature
Hello all!
The past 2 months have been an absolute whirlwind! What started as taking a meeting to become an archival assistant has turned into producing a feature film, meeting new friends and collaborators, and gaining experience by diving in head first with the guidance of an incredibly supportive production team.
When Maura Smith - the writer and director of Where’s George? - asked me to join the project as a producer, I was obviously thrilled. Since finishing undergrad, it has been quite a journey learning how to navigate the film/production world and figuring out what I want to do next, so this opportunity came at the perfect time. I was aware that independent productions require the crew to take on multiple jobs across departments, but with this being the first feature I’ve worked on, being a part of a production of this size and duration really opened my eyes to the complexities and cooperation required in filmmaking.
Beyond my role as a producer, I was a part of scouting and acquiring permits for locations, coordinating with crew, taking behind the scenes photos, making my acting debut as a briefly featured extra, shooting B-roll with Maura and a group of our actors, and even being asked to direct some scenes! Of all the jobs and tasks I was asked to take on, being asked to direct was the most thrilling. From wrangling child-actors and a dog to working with TV and film legend Charlene Tilton, I couldn’t have asked for a more educational hands-on experience. I’m also incredibly grateful to the lighting/camera department who were so patient, kind, and generous with their knowledge. From teaching us how to quickly and confidently take a part c-stands, to answering my many questions about camera gear/settings and lighting set-ups, I really couldn’t have asked for a better crew.
Looking forward to sharing updates about Where’s George? and other projects/events in the coming months! :-)
